Coach Allen Phillips remarked that Ned Martin was “one of the finest athletes he had ever observed at The High School.” As a senior during the 1960-61 season, Ned solidified that reputation by serving as captain of the varsity football, basketball, and baseball teams, ultimately earning recognition as the School’s best athlete. A slick ball-handler and pinpoint passer, he anchored the Maroon as the starting quarterback, leading the team to a dominant 8-1 record in 1960 and orchestrating historic wins, including a thrilling night-game victory over Wakefield.

On the basketball court, Ned was the sparkplug and playmaker for the Maroon. As the team’s captain and a 5-foot-11-inch starting guard, he led the squad in scoring during the 1960-61 season, averaging more than 12 points per game while pacing the team to a 10-5 record. Known for his ball-handling skills, defense, and leadership, he delivered standout performances throughout his career, including a 23-point game against St. Christopher’s and a 22-point showing against Landon.

Ned was equally spectacular on the diamond, where he achieved the rare distinction of being elected team captain for both his junior and senior seasons. As a second baseman and lead-off hitter, he provided the spark for the infield. During the 1959 season, he led the team with a .286 batting average, and by 1961, Whispers lauded him as “the flashiest ballplayer on the team” for his elite glove work and ability to consistently get on base.
