Jenner Wood was a dominant force for the Maroon, earning three varsity letters in football, winter track, and spring track, and serving as a captain for each team during his senior year. Jenner was the co-captain of the 1969 varsity football team, leading the squad in both rushing yards and total points scored. His stellar senior campaign earned him a selection to the All-Prep League team and was highlighted by a touchdown performance against traditional rival Woodberry Forest in a decisive 21-0 shutout victory.
Jenner achieved historic success on the track, anchoring teams that went 19-1 in the spring and 14-2 in the winter across his junior and senior seasons. As a member of the undefeated 1969 spring track team — which was inducted into the EHS Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013 — Jenner helped the program compile a 19-1 record and captured two state championships over his final two years. Individually, Jenner set the school record in the 330-yard intermediate hurdles with a time of 41.1 seconds, and he ran for several record-breaking mile relay teams that never lost a single race during his final two years.
As captain of the 1970 winter track team, Jenner led the squad to a 7-1 record, suffering only a single one-point loss over two seasons. He started both the mile and the 880-yard relays, setting a new school record in the latter. In the spring of 1970, he captained the track team to a 9-1 record and ran a crucial leg for the mile relay team that tied the school record of 3:25.5.
Reflecting on his legacy, longtime friend Joe Simpson ’69 shared, “We celebrate Jenner’s athletic achievements in football and track at EHS. He practiced hard and won big. It has been my privilege to know Jenner for 60 years. He is a great friend of immeasurable character and a true Hall of Fame man in every aspect of life.”
