The 1998 varsity football team completed a historic and undefeated season, finishing with a perfect 9-0 record and capturing the IAC championship. Under the leadership of captains Bryson Spinner ’99 and Will Chapman ’99, the Maroon established themselves as a dominant powerhouse, outscoring their opponents 348-136. The season’s defining moment was a decisive 40-10 victory over rival Woodberry Forest, marking Episcopal’s third consecutive win over the Tigers. In that final contest, the Maroon amassed 554 total yards of offense while the defense held Woodberry to just 221 yards.
The team’s offensive unit was exceptionally explosive, averaging 38.6 points and 418.9 total yards per game. Spinner spearheaded the attack at quarterback, leading the team in rushing with 888 yards and 21 touchdowns while passing for another 1,388 yards and 16 touchdowns. Running back Jon Trapp ’01 added 751 rushing yards, averaging 7.2 yards per carry. Through the air, wide receiver Carl Morris ’99 led the receiving corps with 21 catches for 576 yards and nine touchdowns, while Davis White ’99 contributed 22 receptions for 345 yards and four touchdowns.
Defensively, the Maroon were incredibly staunch, holding opponents to averages of just 136 rushing yards and 99 passing yards per game. Linebacker Will Chapman ’99 anchored the defense with 54 tackles, 25 assists, and three fumble recoveries. He was supported by linebacker Davis White’s 43 tackles and defensive back Carl Morris ’99, who recorded 40 tackles, two fumble recoveries, and two blocked kicks. Defensive contributors Ryan Egle ’99, Ted Maffitt ’99, Lawson Burnat ’99, Victor Jung ’99, and Chris Koh ’00 all surpassed 40 tackles to solidify the defensive unit, which forced 16 fumble recoveries and seven interceptions over the course of the season.
The extraordinary talent and depth of the 1998 roster resulted in nine players being named to the All-IAC team. Spinner received Washington Post All-Met honors, while Chapman earned All-Met Honorable Mention.
